New Texas Law Protects CHLS

A defendant who uses force or deadly force that is justified under Chapter 9, Penal Code, is immune from civil liability for personal injury or death that results from the defendant's use of force or deadly force, as applicable.

House Bill 2560 is now law

Texas Depart. of Family and Protective Services from prohibiting CHL holders from transporting foster children in a motor vehicle where a handgun is kept in the CHL holder's possession.
Gun Owner’s Responsibilities

It is the gun owner’s responsibility to learn and follow all
applicable laws that pertain to the purchase, possession and use of guns in his or her jurisdiction.

It is the gun owner’s responsibility to ensure that unauthorized and untrained individuals cannot gain access to his or her guns.  Guns are neither safe nor unsafe by themselves.  When people practice responsible gun ownership, guns are safe.

Reducing CHL Training Requirement

The Texas Senate approved  a bill 864 that would  reduce the hours of training required to get a state concealed handgun license. The training requirement have been reduced to 4 to 6 hours.

Training would cover gun safety, gun storage and dispute resolution and applicants would still be required to pass a shooting range test.

CHL License Category:

The category of the handgun used for proficiency demonstration is no longer required, regardless of whether a semi-auto handgun or a revolver was used for proficiency demonstration.

Currently, all CHLs will reflect “SA” as the category. Changes to the laminated license are being developed and will be implemented at a later date.

 Veteran's CHL License

Caption: Relating to the issuance of veterans of specially marked licenses to carry a concealed handgun and specially marked personal identification certificates.

Authorizes the Department to print “Veteran” on the laminated CHL.

Changes to the laminated license are being developed to allow for the “Veteran” designation and are expected to be available as an option in the near future.

No More Renewals

Eliminates the requirement for CHL holders to complete a renewal course. Proficiency demonstration will also no longer be required.  CHL holders will continue to have an option to submit the renewal application online.
